About this reading
Read the familiar Vedic invocation of Tryambaka and its imagery of release from bondage.
This is a vedic mantra collection. The explanations below are concise reading aids, rather than a complete word-by-word translation. Recitation traditions can differ.
This is a spiritual prayer. It does not establish a guaranteed cure, longer life or avoidance of danger.
Original text and meaning
1. Mahamrityunjaya mantra
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥
Roman reading: Oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam .
urvārukamiva bandhanānmṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt .
Meaning: We worship Tryambaka, fragrant and nourishing. As a ripe fruit is released from its bond, the prayer asks for release from death, and not separation from immortality.
Reading and repetition
- Read the text slowly and understand its meaning first. You may begin with one name or one prayer.
- Sit comfortably and repeat at a natural pace. Clear, attentive reading matters more than a count; no number is prescribed for every reader.
- Roman text is a reading aid. It does not encode Vedic pitch accents or replace instruction in your recitation tradition. Follow appropriate guidance for a formal ritual.
- The accompanying artwork is a symbolic devotional depiction. Use it to connect the name being read with its subject.
